iPhone Home:

In our last issue we advised our clients to wait to buy an iPhone.

Truth is we did not follow our own advice and purchased our iPhone on Day 2 of its release. LA MACTECH is putting the groundbreaking handheld through its paces to give our clients the best iPhone advice, tips and tricks.

First, the pros:
  • Ease of Use: The User Interface leaves BlackBerry, Treo and Windows Mobile in the dust!
  • Flawless syncing with Macs: No dupes, no data discrepancies or corruption
  • Email setup and access is simple and renders perfectly.
  • Internet browsing with Safari is very nearly the same as using Safari on a Mac or PC.
  • Great SMS (texting) application: Texts, in iChat-like bubbles, are "conversations" organized by person.

And now, the cons:

  • Battery life is shortened significantly while using WiFi (turning it off in "Settings" is a workaround).
  • iChat not included: No built-in chat for AIM, Yahoo or MSN users.
  • No Adobe Flash plug-in for Safari as yet (Adobe and Apple are working on an optimized version of the plug-in).
  • No To Do's are synced to the device, only calendar events.
  • No Drag-and-drop text: The cursor can be moved for editing but there is no copying and pasting enabled.

iPhone Tips and Tricks:

Attention_Color
Restart your iPhone's Mac OS X every few days or when your iPhone seems sluggish. Doing so re-registers your iPhone with the AT&T EDGE network and may yield faster network connections.

Here's how:

  • Simultaneously hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons.
  • Release the buttons once you see the red slider.
  • Move the slider to the right to power down the iPhone.
  • Wait 15 to 30 seconds and turn it back.
  • Hold the Sleep/Wake button until you see the Apple logo.

The iPhone Rumor Mill:

Speculation is running rampant about new features that Apple and AT&T may soon release. Rumors further suggest that Apple will release a smaller and less expensive nano-type iPhone. Techmuscle will keep clients up-to-date on all iPhone news.

New and Improved 10.4.10 Gets Green Light:

Soon after Apple released its update to Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.10), users began to experience some update-related issues. Audio pops and clicks on Intel-based Macs was one such problem.

Last week Apple released an updated
10.4.10 update (v. 1.1) for Intel-based Mac users and Audio Update 2007-001 for users who already applied the original 10.4.10 update. PowerPC-based Mac users do not need the Audio Update.

If you have not already updated to 10.4.10, LA MACTECH now recommends you do.

Attention_Color To help ensure a successful update, please follow these guidelines:
1. Quit all open applications.
2. Eject, then disconnect all external FireWire and/or USB Drives.
3. Repair Disk Permissions (Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to open Disk Utility)
4. Select your hard drive from the list on the left and click "Repair Disk Permissions."
5. When repairs are finished, restart you Mac in Safe mode by holding down the Shift key until "SAFE BOOT" appears on your Login screen. NOTE: Safe boots take much longer than normal boots so be patient!
6. Restart normally
7. Select "Software Update" from the Apple Menu and select the 10.4.10 update (along with any other un-applied updates).
8. DO NOT open any other applications or work on your Mac during the update process.
9. Restart when asked. NOTE: Restart may take longer than normal and your Mac may restart twice.

View Apple's Knowledge Base article about using Software Update here.

Delta or Combo Update?
  • For users updating to 10.4.10 from 10.4.9 read Apple's Delta Update Knowledge Base article here.
  • For users updating to 10.4.10 from 10.4.8 and below, read Apple's Combo Update Knowledge Base article here.

For Advanced Users:

If you use software that utilizes Input Managers (/Library/InputManagers or ~/Library/InputManagers) please remove them prior to updating to 10.4.10.

If you wish to use a Mac OS X Standalone updater instead of using Software Update, please follow guidelines found on
MacFixIt.com.
