Tiger Update Adds Security and Squashes Bugs

Wednesday, October 4, 2006

This past Friday, Apple released a Macintosh Operating System update for Tiger (Mac OS 10.4). The update, version 10.4.8, is available via Software Update or as a standalone updater. The update is available for both Power PC and Intel Macs.

Techmuscle has tested 10.4.8 and we have found it to be a stable update -- though we strongly recommend that you follow these guidelines from MacFixIt.com:

Avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring.

Before installing this security update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations (Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update).

Disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying Mac OS X 10.4.8 (except for your keyboard and mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted.

Note that the first restart after applying Mac OS X 10.4.8 may be abnormally long and/or the computer may restart twice. This is normal. Subsequent restarts should take place at normal speed.

To apply this update you may use Software Update (located under the Apple Menu) to automatically install 10.4.8. (remember to follow the guidelines above!). If you are not an administrator on your computer, or you just want help installing the update, please contact us.
